barbara hammond: projects

WE ARE PUSSY RIOT or EVERYTHING IS P.R. is now available to university theaters for consideration in their student production schedule.  This play had an electric production at Emerson Stage in April 2016, directed by Kenneth Prestininzi, and was acted, stage managed, lit, costumed and set by all all-star team of undergraduates.

I used Pussy Riot members’ own words, their trial transcripts, their letters from prison, and public statements by Putin, Patriarch Kirill, Anna Politkovskaya and even Madonna to provide the framework around which to construct this circus-play.  It is a marvelous opportunity to challenge students about genre, form and the very purpose of theatre.

part political play, part punk performance, all ecstatic! -- Emily Morse, New Dramatists

Visible from Four States can be produced as community-based theatre with live music. The experience is intended to be immersive, with revival-tent style theatricality. This play is twenty-seven scenes long and covers the time period from Palm Sunday to Good Friday.  There are four characters: Pastor Al; the cash-poor landowner Ike; Daniel, the state prison warden on the brink of retirement; and Joanna, Daniel’s wife and the clerk at the local gas station.

The EVA-AROUND-THE-WORLD project is designed to facilitate small theatres around the globe to create and document, via still photographs, video or audio recording, performances of Eva the Chaste on May 30th, Joan of Arc’s Feast Day.
